What If

What if my heart is cold hiding in deep shadows where sorrows play
And dreams of silver and gold are just echoes in yet another fleeting day
What if laughter fades to silence along with all we hold dear
And love is a distant illusion while every day is a year

What if time relentlessly strides into our dreams, which like petals fall
Stealing the warmth from passion leaving empty echoes in an empty hall
What if promises and hope fades away leaving a broken and fragile ember
Of a love so fervent and true and now memories we struggle to remember

What if we yearn for a tender kiss and unbidden our tears start to flow
As heartaches just grow and grow and our life is full of woe
What if in the moments when the world is quiet and everything seems to stand still
Will we find the strength to carry on to weave a poem of “what ifs” as a testament to will

What if amidst the tears of sorrow that daily fall
Can a seed of defiance bloom and a glimmer of resilience start to stand tall
What if within the pain we feel our hearts will rise up and cling
To thoughts of a better tomorrow and even in our darkest hours we will find a new song to sing.
