Today

The battles are over
Fields are again green
Dotted with poppies and clover
And the world again feels clean

But on this day in November
We think of who stayed in those fields
Their courage, their sacrifice, and we remember
We acknowledge that they were our shields

They faced unbelievable suffering and pain
So today their families and all of us
Can stand in the sun, in the rain
And remember in quiet thoughtful dignity with no fuss.
