A Garden in January

In the chill of January a garden lies still
Wrapped in a hush under a dull sky
Yet beneath the ground colour sleeps
A collection of dreams in nature’s keep

Trees with bare branches reach for a cold grey sky
Yet dormant buds hold stories untold
Amidst the sleep of petals and leaves
The garden is in repose, where time deceives

Through flowers sleep, roots burrow deep
A commitment to another coming
And while the earth is a canvas of brown
Flowers wait in peace for the sun to crown

January’s garden is a quiet place
Where nature rests in an orderly routine
But it is just a prelude to an awakening soon to come
When Winter gives way to Spring and the warmth of the sun.
